Oudtshoorn – 16 September

Peter 4

Today, September 16, Lisa and neighbor Puma painted her mother’s house. At least, the interior walls which she wanted white. The ceiling is also done and we think it looks fine.

Tomorrow the car has to go to the garage for a 10000 km service and Lisa will supervise the installation of the wood stove. Depending on these matters, we will decide how to proceed tomorrow!

Tonight we ate at Spurs, a local chain in South Africa where we were served by a clone of our son Tom. Slightly darker and a bit friendlier to us  .

We have both been very surprised for several weeks now about how the Netherlands and South Africa deal with Corona. Especially after the recently flared up discussion about access to restaurants and bars with a vaccination certificate. Here Corona is quite an issue but at place 10 of the important news facts. The number of deaths and infections is comparable to the Netherlands, where the vaccination rate is much lower (20% or so). Nevertheless, the hospitality industry is completely accessible to anyone who wants this and there is a relaxed government campaign to persuade people to get vaccinated on the same grounds as in the Netherlands. What strikes us is the acceptance and relaxed response of the population to the, very reasonable, measures taken by the government. Here Corona is just a ‘thing’ among all the other ‘things’. Here, a corona passport with ID check for access to the bars /restaurants would lead to a popular uprising while a request for hygiene and distance in the same places is followed up without murmuring.

Tomorrow a busy day and beyond? We’ll see
