Harrismith – 28 September 2021

Peter 6

Tonight, September 28th, we sleep in Harrismith  about 300 km from  Johnnesburg. We came here by driving from Cradock (last Monday) via Bloemfontein.

The road from Cradock ran northeast along the Gariep lake, a huge reservoir in the Orange River. We crossed the Orange River via a beautiful arch bridge and finally arrived in Bloemfontein. This is a city that we both don’t have much for. It is warm, windy and there is little to see but the hotel was fine with an en-suite bathroom including WC. So cozy…..

We ate in the restaurant of the hotel and that was very empty but good.

Today we drove via the N8 towards Maseru which is the capital of Lesotho. Just before the border crossing we took the R26 and that road was full of potholes. There were stretches that we had to navigate in order not to end up in 30-40 cm deep holes. On the way there were many cars on the side with flat tires or worse ……

Fortunately, the road improved after 50 km and we ate deliciously at a padstal with all natural products.

The last part of the road went through the Golden Gate Highlands park and that is very beautiful, see also the pictures of the sandstone rocks that we encountered along the way. We also saw zebras and springboks walking. The  pass road we followed was quite high (2000 m) and winding. Along the way there were also several roadside fires that we had to pass with some caution.

Tomorrow we leave for Johannesburg so that we have time to meet the requirements of the COVID mafia Thursday.
