Rustenburg now with niece Brumilda and her husband Rowan. Yesterday morning we left from Britstown on the N12 direction Kimberly. An endless road through the Karoo who slowly but surely passed into the North- Western Province’s grassland. Kimberly is known for the “Big Hole”. Here the diamond mining began, by Cecil Rhodes, yes the one of Rhodesia. The hole is hundreds of meters deep and is now full of water. Kimberly itself is not a nice city; there is a lot of neglect.
On the way we went over the Orange River which is the longest river of South Africa. The river owes its name to the mud colour which is slightly orange. The significance of the river for South Africa is enormous because irrigation works depend on the water.
We came across a young man who walked along the road with a huge backpack, hill up. Because we stood still for road works we were talking. He was without money and without work and walked now to the next village. He looked very healthy so we had the impression that he was making an adventurous journey through South Africa. We gave him ZAR 200 for food.
The day ended at Klipspruit River Resort near Leeudoringstad. That place made us very sad because it looked like a beautiful place that had been completely worn out by its inhabitants. Horrible what people can do with their environment.
The Resort was beautifully situated on the Vaal River. That river also owes its name to the colour, which is so…. “vaal”.
The next day we went to Rustenburg where we arrived after a short drive to the family. Brumilda and Rowan live in an apartment a bit outside of Rustenburg. Later in the day we watched rugby in a nearby pub. Unfortunately we missed the last 10 minutes because of heavy thunderstorms and rain.
Tomorrow we will continue towards the east.
Just keep in mind:”Sometimes we travel yet we don’t travel”.
Sterkte Pienaar familie
Have a blessed Sunday and a beautiful week
Flim
Mooi!
