It’s already April 13 today and it’s another beautiful Saturday with wonderful temperatures and a nice sun. Yesterday we went to Robben Island which is right off the coast. This island is of course famous or notorious for the prisoners who have spent much of their lives here, including Nelson Mandela. We’ve been here before, but that was a long time ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

We bought tickets online before departure at 1 p.m. from Cape Town Harbour. It is more than 45 minutes by boat to Robben Island. What we remembered from last time is that it was an extremely professional affair. That impression was immediately gone when we were at the boat at 1 p.m. and learned that there was a delay of more than 2 hours. Then why do you have to provide a phone number and email address if this is not used anyway?<\/span><\/p>\n

Just after 3 pm we left anyway and I got a bit tired of the videos that were shown there that told the ANC and PAC story very unilaterally. It seemed like I got a tour of East-Berlin in the 80s of the last century. Apparently telling dry facts is no longer enough for the tourists, but the emphasis must be placed on the bad whites (colonizers) and the poor blacks (victims of this) and completely ignore what it was really about, namely a completely insane system of apartheid with many more victims and perpetrators of which Robbeneiland was an exponent of the worst kind.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the tour guide on the island often fell into this trap, which brought down the power of her story. Because of course she had a powerful story.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tour of the cell complex was done by an incredible guide who told a story that stuck with us in a very penetrating way, from his own perspective (he had been there for 5 years because of throwing stones). What an unimaginably authentic story this man told and how beautifully he could explain how he had now, 70 years old, found himself again.<\/span><\/p>\n

For both of us, this was a highlight.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, we saw Mandela’s cell and were surprised how someone could live there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today we are not doing anything else. I walked and Lisa is running now<\/span><\/p>\n
