Slept wonderfully and long last night especially because it was so cool. Unfortunately, that won’t take long because it will be well above 40 degrees here today and that’s not something to look forward to.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yesterday I wrote a lot about the ups and downs of the locals here and that resulted in many comments and questions from the Netherlands. It is true that alcohol is a big problem here in this village and throughout South Africa and that this is bigger than, for example, in the Netherlands. In addition, there are large groups of young people addicted to tik (crystal meth). The causes for this are easy to identify, namely unemployment, diseases and the resulting poverty. South Africans like my family but also neighbors, are filled with care and compassion for this and do what they can to help. There are many agencies that interfere with families who need help and who do a good job wherever possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, sometimes only humor remains when you come into contact with misery like yesterday and you just laugh about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

There was strong sewer smell in the house this morning and we couldn’t find where it came from. Until my mother-in-law suddenly saw a lot of flies in the bedroom and it turned out that cousin Dominique had left meat there on Friday. Well that’s going to stink…<\/span><\/p>\n

In the middle of the day we fled the heat. It got too bad and we still had to get some things to do so we drove 80 km away to George where it’s just 13 degrees colder.<\/span><\/p>\n

The water tank has now been flushed after being cleaned with African Steradent (thanks Sander). Tomorrow I’ll let all the water run away and then the car is ready. Of course some small things still have to be bought (filling gas bottle, kettle) and done (installing a spat flap) but that is just small stuff<\/span><\/p>\n
