Glentana – 8 September

Peter 6

Today, September 8th, we are at the beach at a campsite in Glentana, near  Mosselbay. Since the last blog post, from Jeffrey’s  Bay, we have driven westwards.

I mentioned in my previous post that there was a halo to see around the sun but I had forgotten the pictures. Also a photo of the wagon that stood on the campsite in the Baviaanskloof with which almost 200 years ago people drove into the interior, with a pair of oxen in front of it. Fortunately, our camper is a bit bigger!

From Jeffrey’s Bay we drove on the N2 along the south coast of South Africa along the  Tsitsikamma mountains. This is an important part of the so-called Garden route because there is a huge variety of trees and plants to see. This is due to the local climate with rainfall, fog and relatively high temperatures.

There is also a very famous bridge near Bloukrans where you can do bungee jumping. I don’t want to think about it…..

Just after the toll gate we left the N2 to drive via Nature’s Valley to our campsite (Firefly   Rock). Again a beautiful campsite with an outdoor shower and large pitches. The first night we actually had a lot of rain and we spent the evening under the canopy watching a movie I had brought with me.

The next day we descended to the town of Nature’s Valley which is located on a beautiful lagoon with tropical rainforest everywhere and a beautiful beach with beautiful waves. It is a typical holiday resort but located in a kind of paradise. It is also the starting point of the  Ottertrail, a hike of about 50 km along the coast towards Stormsrivier. A tough trip that takes about 5 days indicating that it is not an easy walk.

There is also an easier and shorter path towards the Salt River and we took that. Here you walk straight through the rainforest in a humid atmosphere with a cool breeze from the sea. The ascent was not too bad (about 100 m) and in total it was about 6 km of walking (there and back). The pictures speak for themselves!

Today we drove about 2 hours towards Mosselbay to visit a former colleague who has moved to South Africa with his family.  He has big plans and it was very nice.

Tomorrow we stay here for a day doing nothing and Friday we will leave. We have since heard that the wood stove will be placed at Lisa’s mother next Thursday. Saturday there is a short service at the grave of her father where Lisa wants to be with and then we leave for Prince Albert in the Great Karoo.
