6 April, De Aar

Peter 4

It is today April 6 and we slept with cousin Ozzie in De Aar, in the bush camper. It was nice and fresh though we were kept out of sleep by a bunch of irritating barking dogs. Wednesday we drove from Dysseldorp to the Uitspan Farm located in the Baviaanskloof. This is a long stretched nature area north of the well known Garden Route and Tzitzikamma. This forested coastal area is barely 50 km away and the contrast cannot be greater, see the pictures. The name Baviaanskoof got its name from the there living baboons which are largely exterminated three hundred years ago. It is a completely deserted natural park with only one road through which only 4X4 can be done. About the 170 km long road will take at least 5 hours if no longer and you have to drive through water and the road becomes a two track road.

On the Uitspan Farm we were told that the road is very bad now and we decided to choose another route. The campsite was beautiful and incredibly quiet. The Farm was started as a so-called ‘ drinking farm ‘ of a bunch of friends. Here they went in the weekends to drink, yes, beer. Meanwhile, the farm has been taken over by 1 of these drinkers and is a camping/cottage.

The road there is almost unearthly, narrow and through deep gorges and just wider than the car.

Thursday we drove to Graaff Reinet because Lisa wanted to see her former boss Maureen to say goodbye. They worked for years in Cape town and after Lisa emigrated to the Netherlands, Maureen took the step back to her home village to set up a B&B. Unfortunately, she was betrayed.

Friday we drove to De Aar where we will stay until tomorrow (Sunday). Then we drive to Rustenburg in a few days to give niece Brumilda her African canvases Tuesday.

Prachtig, Peet, wat een bizar landschap!

Fantastisch mooi. Kun je weer ademhalen buiten de stad. Jammer dat de dirtroad to much dit bleek. Wel mooie afsluitende tocht met zijn 2en. X
