Peter 11

We just arrived at our campsite, 20 km North of Britstown in the Karoo. Britstown is a small town along the N12 which is the road from Capetown to Jo’burg. Today was a relaxed drive as I kept my speed to 80-85 km/h. I was overtaken by everyone including trucks. The route was from Beaufort West and Three Sisters. My cousin Boetie, police officer in the district, told a nice story about BW. Just north of the city, a national park is situated with a male lion named Sylvester. Sylvester did not like fences so he escaped many times. At that time, all the thieves and other criminals stayed at home. Sylvester now lives in the southern part of the Karoo with three lionesses.

The Karoo is a huge plain which looks like the moon, at least that is what I think. It is a semi-desert with grass, 30 – 40 cm high ans sometimes a tree or a very courageous farmer. It is a desolate landscape even on the highway.

Tomorrow we drive 460 km in the direction of the Vaal river
