16 November – Lusaka

Peter 4

We are on a campsite near Lusaka after a 450 km drive over excellent roads, at least the first 250 km. The last piece was dodgy but still very decent. Zambia is clearly working on the roads to give a great makeover, supported by the European Union, according to the signs along the highway. Until the bridge over the Luangwa River, the road is just magnificent. That bridge is a story apart, just look at the picture, in the lower left.

The landscape changed during the ride. First a plateau (over 1000 m high), then there were hills and winding roads with steep slopes. Everywhere there were always trees, trees, huge trees.

I was stopped several times today and one time the cop could not restrain his curiosity and he wanted to look at the back of the car. There was also a speed trap but we were informed with light signals. The speed limit here is what is unclear. In principle 120 but sometimes 80 or 60 and in the villages 50. It is not always indicated, or actually very often not! At the villages they have found a great way to force you to 50 by having huge ‘ speedbumps ‘. Oh well it keeps you busy and they are of course right. Now I can reach 120 km/h with this truck but then hill off and windforce 5 in the back. We usually drive 80-90 km/h.

Tomorrow we go via Lusaka to the south (Lake Kariba) where we want to stay a few days
